La constitution des « publics » chez Dewey [1927] et la délibération inclusive chez Young [2000] visent la résolution d’un problème analogue, celui de la démocratisation effective de la société. Pour y parvenir, il faut, de part et d’autre, revenir au concept politique de « groupe » et le définir non pas ontologiquement – le critère d’identité par exemple – mais fonctionnellement comme une forme opératoire de structuration et de représentation d’intérêts communs. L’une des conditions de possibilité d’une telle (...) approche des « groupes » suppose cependant la construction d’un savoir partagé. On montrera que cette condition demeure problématique dans sa réalisation et que, par conséquent, les difficultés auxquelles se heurtaient Dewey à propos des « publics » se retrouvent dans la théorie youngienne de la démocratie inclusive. Théophile Gautier, French romanticist writer, visits Russia twice in 1858/61. His Voyage en Russie (1866) is not just a travelogue, but rather an intrinsically philosophical text about travelling, about the perception of the own and the other, suggesting “(self)alienation”, “bracketing” of the world and one’s own experience as a means of aesthetic pleasure and intellectual penetration; a reflection on the “gift of the visible”; on the mutual in- and superscriptions of reality, imagination and art – in one word: (...) a “phenomenological” experiment avant la lettre. Cet article interroge le statut du magique chez le premier Sartre à la fois comme héritage d'un dialogue avec la psychologie et l'anthropologie françaises et comme le lieu de la coupure phénoménologique par laquelle se développe une philosophie de l'existence originale. L'A. retrace l'apparition de la conscience magique, pour laquelle la spontanéité persiste d'une manière spécifique là où elle semblait mise en défaut, notamment dans les pathologies de l'imagination et dans l'émotion. Aussi la catégorie du magique permet-elle de penser l'autonomie (...) de la conscience irréfléchie en dotant ses différentes attitudes d'une signification selon une approche synthétique de la réalité-humaine. En un autre point névralgique chez Sartre, la conscience absolue s'emprisonne dans le monde selon un phénomène de dégradation grâce auquel apparaît le psychique : cette existence mixte entre pour-soi et en-soi est irréductiblement magique. Or, le fait psychique est le lieu des relations concrètes avec autrui et l'A. montre, qu'en dernière instance, le magique reparaît dans l'ontologie phénoménologique à travers le schème de la possession – possession d'autrui et possession des choses – mettant la transcendance au compte d'une sorcellerie originelle. En partant principalement de la Théorie de la valuation [1939], il s’agira, d’une part, de rappeler les principaux contours de la théorie des valeurs chez Dewey – qui relève pleinement de l’analyse empiriste, contre la position de l’empirisme logique incarnée ici par A. Ayer – et, d’autre part, de montrer que cette théorie permet, de manière originale, de reconstruire le continuum du biologique au social. Il s’agira de montrer qu’une « politique des valeurs » est possible parce que leur naturalisation, (...) c’est-à-dire leur ancrage dans les désirs et les intérêts, en permet la discutabilité. La tension entre nature et histoire délimite alors un espace propre à la critique des valeurs. (shrink)

Increasingly, frontiers between business and philanthropy seem to be blurred. Reward-Based Crowdfunding platforms contribute to this blurring of lines since they propose funders to support both for-profit and philanthropic projects. Our empirical paper explores the case of Ulule, the leading crowdfunding platform in Europe. Our results, based on a statistical analysis of more than 3000 projects, show that crowdfunding platforms foster specific kinds of relationships relying on reciprocal giving, beyond the usual opposition between altruistic and selfish motivations. We use the (...) work of Marcel Mauss to account for this process of reciprocal giving, and we argue that Maussian theory of gift can be used more generally to describe funding activities in the context of early stage entrepreneurship. L' histoire, chez Hume, est souvent envisagée comme un recueil d'expériences susceptibles de confirmer les propositions générales de la théorie politique. Cette articulation entre « général » et « particulier » décrit l'une des relations entre histoire et philosophie ; il en existe d'autres. Certaines des propositions du Traité de la nature humaine permettent de montrer que l'affirmation d'une différence irréductible entre histoire et philosophie est parfois l'occasion de formuler autrement certaines des difficultés auxquelles se heurte la théorie entendue comme (...) travail de généralisation. L'étude de quelques aspects de la critique humienne du contrat et de la manière de considérer la question du temps comme milieu de la transformation laisse supposer qu' histoire et théorie sont dans des rapports d' « exigences réciproques » et que la première, loin d'être toujours conditionnée comme savoir des circonstances particulières, est parfois ce qui détermine le domaine à l'intérieur duquel la généralisation peut avoir lieu. Il existe donc un renversement possible de l'ordre des relations entre histoire et philosophie qui doit permettre, également, de revenir sur la qualification du scepticisme de Hume. History with Hume is often understood as a compendium of experiences liable to confirm the general propositions of political theory. Such an articulation between the general and the particular describes one of the relationships existing between history and philosophy. There are quite a few others. Some of the propositions of the Treatise of Human Nature enable to show how the irreducible difference between history and philosphy is sometimes the opportunity to formulate in a new way some of the difficulties to which the theory heard as the working-through of generalization may collide itself. The study of a few aspects of the humean criticism of the contract and of how to unterstand the topic of time as the circle of transformation allow one to assume that both history and theory hold together a relationship of reciprocal demands and that the former, far from always being conditioned as a knowledge of specific circumstance, is sometimes what determines the field in which generalization may take place. Such a liable reversal of the relationships between philosophy and history may also requalify Hume's scepticism. (shrink)

Strong between- and within-animal differences during spatial activities lead us to claim that a given animal is directly sensitive to a given substructure of the global array. This vicarious subset is not cut out by the senses but by redundancies emerging from physical properties. We argue that the subset is not a single ambient array, or a combination of single ambient arrays, but a complex holistic part of the global array.

This paper examines the relationship between the critique of civilization, anti-imperialism, gender and representative government in the political thought of the neglected communist, environmentalist, and gay liberationist Edward Carpenter (1844–1929). In recent years, there has been a dramatic growth in the historical literatures on anti-imperialism and representative government, yet these two topics are rarely connected. Meanwhile, a voluminous literature on the concept of civilization and its role in British imperialism has largely ignored its role in justifying social and political domination (...) in Britain itself. Carpenter's writings on these topics are important because he offers a defense of the value of representative government that is grounded in his anti-imperialism. Furthermore, his critique of civilization led him to connect problems of social domination in India to the struggles of women, homosexuals, and the working class. These groups ought in turn to be enfranchised and given roles in the functioning of the state. (shrink)

ABSTRACT This paper offers an integrated account of maturity and the requisites of individuality in the political thought of John Stuart Mill, bridging his writings on the individual and society. To do so, it focuses on Mill's account of the relationship between civilization, democracy, class, individuality and custom in his later political thought. Mill draws on these concepts to flesh out his account of maturity in both individuals and societies. Mill's conception of custom, in particular, bridges the individual and society. (...) Maturity, simply defined, is the ability to be self-governing. For Mill, only mature individuals and societies are entitled to be self-determining. In offering a unified account of maturity in Mill, this paper is departing from two different views of maturity in Mill that have become popular in recent scholarship. It also offers interpretations of the relationship between civilization and democracy, and class and custom in Mill. (shrink)

We review some 30 years of academic research on corporate philanthropy, taking stock of the current state of research about this rising practice and identifying gaps and puzzles that deserve further investigation. To do so, we examine a total of 162 academic papers in the fields of management, economics, sociology, and public policy, and analyze their content in a systematic fashion. We distinguish four main lines of inquiry within the literature: the essence of corporate philanthropy, its different drivers, the way (...) it is organized, and its likely outcomes. After reviewing the main findings of the literature, we build on several research gaps to highlight directions for future research on corporate philanthropy with an interest in strengthening our understanding of this fascinating phenomenon at the crossroads of business and society.
